Milan linked with shock Vieri swoop
Sunday, 18 January 2004
Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has revealed he would be keen to sign unsettled star Christian Vieri in a sensational deal from city rivals Internazionale.
Vieri's future at Inter has been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks with Chelsea strongly linked with the prolific hit-man.
The Italian international is thought to be unhappy at Inter and is considering his future.
Ancelotti is a big fan of Vieri and, although he would love to him at Milan, he is not preparing a move for him just yet.
"Vieri is surely a great player but we have so many strikers and so it would be necessary," Ancelotti told Gazzetta dello Sport. "But we would be happy to have him."
"I don't know Vieri personally but one thing is certain - Milan are a united team and whoever joins feels at home."
Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani revealed the club would be ready to fund a move for Vieri if Ancelotti wanted him.
"I am always prepared to do what it takes to keep Ancelotti happy," said Galliani.
Despite stating his interest in funding a move for the Inter hit-man, Galliani then played down his earlier remarks, stating it was no more than a 'witty remark' and that Il Rossoneri are not intending to buy the Italy striker.
"That (remark) over Vieri has been only a witty remark that journalists took from me in Milanello yesterday (Saturday)," Galliani later told the Italian television programme 'Controcampo'.
"I've spoken with Inter president (Massimo) Moratti and he understood it was a witty remark, nothing more.
"We have so many big champions, like (Andrei) Shevchenko, Kaka, (Filippo) Inzaghi, (Jon Dahl) Tomasson and so on."
